BTS just became Guests of Honor in La Plata, and one detail shows how far their global cultural power goes

BTS just picked up a new kind of honor. On July 2, 2026, the La Plata City Council in Argentina officially declared the group “Guests of Honor” ahead of their ARIRANG World Tour stop, turning a set of stadium concerts into an event written into the city’s record.

The title, known locally as “Huéspedes de Honor,” is described as one of La Plata’s highest recognitions for distinguished visitors, especially in arts and culture. BigHit Music said the city was honoring BTS for their global cultural impact and work around youth, a framing that helps explain why fans see the move as historic.

BTS Guests of Honor La Plata: Inside the Historic Vote

During Ordinary Session No. 9 of the Concejo Deliberante de La Plata, council members unanimously approved the BTS Guests of Honor La Plata motion submitted by local fan collective “BTS La Plata.” The project had been filed about a month earlier, and ARMY filled the gallery as the declaration was read out.

By granting the “Huéspedes de Honor” title, La Plata is formally welcoming BTS ahead of three ARIRANG World Tour shows at Estadio Único de La Plata on October 21, 23, and 24, 2026. Korean and Argentinian reports describe the distinction as one of the city’s highest honors for world renowned cultural figures.

Allkpop and Korean press also note that these concerts will make BTS the first Korean act to headline the stadium, often called Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona. With mayor Julio Alak reportedly overseeing preparations around safety and transport, the city is treating the shows like a major civic operation.

ARMY Turned a Fan Project into City Policy

Argentinian outlet TN reports that the “BTS La Plata” collective initiated the Guests of Honor proposal, turning a fan project into official city policy. Video from the council chamber, shared widely online, shows fans celebrating as the motion passes and the group’s name enters the city’s books.

On X, ARMY posts collected by Sportskeeda capture that mix of pride and humor. One fan wrote that BTS “deserve it” and that they were “so proud,” while another joked that La Plata had been upgraded from city to “fan club headquarters,” calling the recognition a “historic moment for the fandom.”

Those same threads compare Argentina’s embrace with the situation in Chile, where the National Sports Institute has refused to authorize BTS use of Santiago’s Estadio Nacional for October 14, 16, and 17 tour dates because of turf and scheduling concerns. Officials suggested alternate areas inside the complex, such as the South Esplanade, but many Chilean fans have rejected the change and even staged protests outside the stadium.

What La Plata’s Honor Reveals About BTS Global Power

La Plata’s move lands during a peak soft power moment for BTS. Their 2026 album Arirang has spent 15 straight weeks among Spotify’s top global albums, including nine at number one, and the group will co headline the FIFA World Cup 2026 final halftime show in New Jersey alongside Madonna and Shakira.
