Why RM becoming the National Museum of Korea’s first global ambassador matters to BTS fans and Korean art

BTS leader RM has officially become the National Museum of Korea’s first global ambassador, turning his long running “museum guy” image into an official national title. The appointment in Seoul on June 19 is a historic first for Korea’s flagship museum.

That means the idol who made ARMY care about gallery labels is now a formal face of Korean heritage. For fans, the new RM National Museum of Korea ambassador role links his art obsession to real institutional power as Korean culture reaches even more global screens and galleries.

RM Named National Museum of Korea’s First Global Ambassador

At the appointment ceremony, the museum named RM its first Global Public Relations Ambassador, citing his deep interest in Korean traditional culture and art. He will join promotional campaigns and help introduce Korean history and cultural heritage overseas, saying he wants “the beauty and value of our cultural heritage” to reach more people.

Director You Hong joon presented him with a special reproduction of Daedongyeojido, a nineteenth century map of the Korean Peninsula from the collection, before touring the special exhibition Danwon Kim Hong do: Painting His Era together. In its announcement, the museum framed RM as a bridge between past and present, Korea and the world.

How RM’s Museum Journey Made Him the Obvious Choice

His new title caps years of concrete support for museums. In 2020 RM donated 100 million won to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to reprint out of print art books, sending thousands of copies to libraries and schools and earning recognition from Arts Council Korea as an art sponsor of the year.

In 2021 and 2022 he gave another 100 million won each year to the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, which helps preserve and reclaim Korean artifacts abroad, drawing praise from the Cultural Heritage Administration. Critics speak of an “RM effect” when he posts museum visits, with one Busan Museum of Art show jumping from a few dozen daily visitors to about 210 after his appearance. The National Museum of Korea itself saw attendance and gift shop sales peak after a 2020 BTS performance on its plaza.

What RM’s New Role Means for BTS Fans and Korean Art Abroad

As global ambassador, RM will help the museum promote Korean history and traditional culture overseas, turning a personal passion into official heritage outreach. His Instagram following of around 45 million towers over the museum’s roughly 146,000 followers, so even a small spillover from ARMY could mean a new wave of young visitors and online learners discovering Korean art.

For United States based fans who may not reach Seoul soon, the clearest way to feel this museum era will be RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me, opening at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on October 3, 2026 and running through February 7, 2027. Co curated by RM, the show will present about 200 works from his collection alongside SFMOMA pieces, positioning Korean artists within a major American museum context.
