Overview

A city framed by the river and lake

The Chicago River beside the Wrigley Building, Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park and the skyline along Lake Michigan provide a practical introduction to the city. The riverwalk and lakefront are distinct routes rather than interchangeable meeting points. Grant Park is especially important here because it is both a visitor destination and a setting for outdoor music events.

Do not confuse a park, an arena and a club

United Center lies west of the Loop; Wintrust Arena is in the McCormick Place area farther south; House of Blues is in River North. Grant Park events use an outdoor site whose entrances and internal layout depend on the production. A general park photograph is not a seating chart, and a normal public path may not be an event entrance. For an arena show, use the gate printed on your ticket rather than aiming for the centre of the complex.

Build a compact pre-concert route

A river walk fits naturally with time in River North, while Buckingham Fountain and a lakefront walk belong to a Grant Park day. Leave the museum visit or architecture tour early enough to retrieve anything that cannot enter the venue. If your show is at United Center or Wintrust Arena, plan the transfer separately instead of treating the downtown sightseeing area as the concert location.

Getting there

Use the CTA journey planner for your exact venue and date. For outdoor events, consult the organiser’s entrance map as well as the transit stop. Weather, event road closures and the walk from the station can affect the final part of a Chicago concert trip.
