NMIXX’s Strange Muse debuts unit songs and six-member writing credits

NMIXX released its sixth mini album, Strange Muse, on Oct. 19, 2026, at 6 p.m. KST, which is 5 a.m. ET for listeners in the United States. The project holds six tracks, but its real story is structural: for the first time since the group’s debut, NMIXX built an album around dedicated unit songs, and every member holds a writing credit on the record.

The concept behind it is easy to state and easy to misread. In NMIXX’s fictional world, MIXXTOPIA, people become muses for each other. Here, “strange” does not mean weird. It describes the parts of a person that others may not understand right away, and the album is designed to prove that idea rather than simply announce it.

What “Strange Muse” and MIXXTOPIA Actually Mean

The members explained the title directly in release materials. “Strange Muse tells a story of how we’re all each other’s muse in MiXtopia,” the group said, describing MIXXTOPIA as “a space where diverse groups of people can shine in their true colors and inspire each other.”

That definition does more than set a mood. A muse, in this framing, is not a distant figure who inspires art from afar. It is the person standing beside you, and that includes the fandom, NSWER. The group added that the EP is meant to show “how our differences can actually help us build a world that we want to live in.”

The wish language ties the concept to the songs. The lead single carries the Korean title 긴 소원, and the idea of a long wish runs through the album. Looking ahead, the members said they wish for health and happiness for themselves, their families and especially NSWER, and that they hope to become artists fans will always be proud of.

Inside “Birthday Wish,” the Lead Single

Birthday Wish is a genre blend by design. It pairs future house with moombahton, the slowed house and reggaeton hybrid, and folds in Afro-house influences. The arrangement moves from energetic dance drops into a quiet piano and vocal passage before ending on a narrated bridge.

Lily said the track stood out immediately and that she spent extra time rehearsing because it carried her first rap part on a title song. “The chorus and the narration were very touching,” she said, adding that the high notes required careful vocal work.

Haewon pointed to the opening narration as the emotional entry point, saying she hopes it pulls listeners into the overwhelming feeling of two people finally meeting. That narration also signals how far NMIXX is willing to push a pop structure to serve the story.

The First Unit Songs: Three Pairs, Three Colors

The unit tracks are the clearest first in NMIXX’s discography. The six members split into three duos, and each pairing wrote lyrics for its own song, a setup that mirrors the album’s idea of two different people inspiring each other.

  • Sing to the Moon pairs Lily and Haewon on a soft ballad.
  • Hot ‘n Unbothered pairs Sullyoon and Bae on a groovy Latin-style track.
  • WHIP pairs Jiwoo and Kyujin on a rap-forward song.

Bae called the process a genuine learning curve. She wrote lyrics for both RudE TaLK and her unit track, and described learning through meetings with an expert lyricist and conversations with Sullyoon about the song’s direction. “I remember calling her even when we were apart to exchange ideas and complete the lyrics,” she said.

Kyujin, who also contributed to composition, said she had wanted to try songwriting and composing for a long time. She described the work as challenging and said she hopes to keep improving.

Why the Member Credits Matter More Than the Format

Unit songs can read as a gimmick unless the members are actually inside them. Here, all six contributed to the songwriting and composition process across the record, with lyric credits on each unit track, Kyujin’s work on composition and Bae’s additional lyrics on RudE TaLK. That level of involvement is a first for an NMIXX album.

It also changes how an NMIXX release can be built. Earlier projects centered on group tracks; this one uses the tracklist to give six performers separate creative lanes. For a group that debuted on Feb. 22, 2022, under JYP Entertainment with the single Ad Mare, it is a noticeably different kind of comeback.

The members have been honest about the pressure that comes with a bigger role. Lily said some pressure to meet expectations existed, though excitement about new music outweighed it. Jiwoo described the feeling as “healthy pressure,” saying it makes the group want to do better because NSWER is always waiting.

The Momentum Behind “Strange Muse”

Strange Muse arrives about five months after Heavy Serenade, and follows the autumn single Blue Valentine. The bigger setup came on Sept. 19, 2026, at the 2026 The Fact Music Awards at Busan Asiad Main Stadium, where NMIXX collected three trophies: Artist of the Year, Sullyoon’s fan-voted My Star Award and the Sound of the Year grand prize, the group’s first grand prize at a music awards ceremony.

The members have treated the win as momentum rather than a finish line. Sullyoon said the award motivates the group to trust itself more and to repay the support with better music and stages. Bae framed it as encouragement that they can go even farther.

What NMIXX Fans Should Watch Next

The next steps are the Birthday Wish music video and live stages, plus the open question of whether the unit tracks get performance stages of their own. That answer will indicate how permanent the unit format becomes.

The era also has a fixed endpoint. NMIXX closes its debut world tour, EPISODE 1: ZERO FRONTIER, with three encore nights at Incheon’s Inspire Arena from Nov. 27 to 29, 2026.

After that, the questions fans will keep returning to are whether the unit structure shows up again on the next release and whether the writing credits grow into larger roles. The members have given their own framing, saying they hope to become artists NSWER will always be proud of. Strange Muse is the first NMIXX album built to show how they plan to do it.
