Nam Joo Hyuk is back in full dark-action mode, this time on Netflix. On July 17, 2026, he fronts new occult K-drama The East Palace, a supernatural sageuk about a cursed royal residence that drops all eight episodes at once, perfect for anyone who sped through Vigilante.
With Nam Joo Hyuk, The East Palace and Netflix colliding, the series arrives as a career reset. It is his first drama since completing military service in September 2024 and since a 2024 court ruling found key accusers in his 2022 school-bullying case guilty of criminal defamation.
Inside The East Palace’s Cursed Spirit Realm
Set in a royal palace haunted by a 30-year bloodstained curse, The East Palace centers on Gu-cheon, played by Nam Joo Hyuk, who can move between the human world and the spirit realm known as the Realm of Gwi. Roh Yoon Seo co-leads as Saeng-gang, a court lady who hears ghosts.
When unexplained deaths rock the crown prince’s residence, the King, played by Cho Seung Woo, secretly hires the duo to hunt resentful spirits and uncover the truth. Trailers show crimson-lit sword fights, distorted creatures and chilling lines like “Those who sin are punished eventually” and “Once you enter the palace, you only leave in death.”
Director Choi Jung-kyu said he wanted Korean shamanistic motifs to “naturally blend into the historical setting,” focusing on pace instead of slow court politics. He describes lavish palace sets, detailed costumes and heavy VFX work, explaining that the team “devoted a great deal of effort to post-production so the story would come across in a clear way” for global viewers.
From Vigilante To Ghost Slayer: Nam Joo Hyuk’s Dark Comeback
In 2023’s eight-episode thriller Vigilante, streaming on Hulu in the US, Nam played a model police student who turned into a brutal night-time enforcer when the system failed. The East Palace keeps that harsh sense of justice but sends Gu-cheon after vengeful spirits instead of criminals, swapping city alleys for haunted palace corridors.
His return follows a turbulent stretch. Anonymous school-bullying claims surfaced in 2022, which he denied, and in 2024 two main informants were convicted of criminal defamation for spreading false information. Nam said he first read the script while enlisted, that “you have a lot of time to let your imagination run free,” and that he had to “do my best and make sure I wasn’t a burden to the production.”
When The East Palace Hits Netflix And How To Binge
- Release date: July 17, 2026
- Episodes: 8
- Platform: Netflix worldwide
- Genre: K-occult action
Because Netflix is dropping all eight episodes at once, The East Palace is built for a contained weekend marathon instead of a long historical commitment. For US viewers who met Nam Joo Hyuk through Vigilante on Hulu, it works as a natural follow-up, trading crime for ghosts while keeping tight, morally loaded action.
Behind the camera, director Choi Jung-kyu, known for The Devil Judge, teams with writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won of The Guest and Bulgasal: Immortal Souls. Choi said the crew aimed for “distinctly Korean aesthetics and visuals,” folding folklore, palace drama and violent spirit battles into a package built for global Netflix viewers.
