PSY’s “Gangnam Style” hits 6 billion YouTube views, revealing why its viral legacy still stands alone

PSY’s “Gangnam Style” 6 billion YouTube views milestone is officially here. Nearly 14 years after the music video arrived in July 2012, the global smash has become the first K-pop video to cross the 6 billion mark on YouTube.

The number is massive, but the bigger story is its staying power. Long before K-pop fandoms treated streaming records as part of comeback season, PSY’s horse dance, bold visuals, and satirical humor gave the internet a video it could instantly recognize and replay.

PSY’s “Gangnam Style” 6 Billion YouTube Views Record

P Nation confirmed that Gangnam Style passed 6 billion views on Friday, extending its lead as the most-viewed K-pop music video of all time. The video previously crossed 5 billion views in December 2023, making this latest leap a reminder that its audience has never been limited to one era of pop culture.

The agency called the achievement “a symbolic milestone in the history of K-pop,” adding that it shows the lasting power of content enjoyed across countries and generations. PSY also celebrated the news during a Sunday concert, thanking fans and promising to upload a new video to YouTube.

Why “Gangnam Style” Still Feels Instantly Familiar

Directed by Cho Soo-Hyun, the music video is built around images that remain easy to remember: PSY dancing in a horse stable, striking exaggerated poses, and delivering the now-famous horse-riding choreography in unexpected places. Its visual comedy is part of why the video traveled far beyond Korean-language music audiences.

The song also had more bite than its bright dance-pop surface suggested. Its title and concept satirize the affluent Seoul neighborhood of Gangnam, while PSY plays up the polished image with deliberately goofy movement and larger-than-life confidence.

That contrast made Gangnam Style feel made for repetition before short-form video culture became a major music strategy. The dance was simple enough to copy, but the video had enough strange details to reward another watch, a formula that helped turn it into a defining internet-era pop moment.

How PSY Opened a New K-Pop YouTube Era

PSY’s breakthrough arrived before BTS and BLACKPINK became household names in the US, and it offered many American listeners an early introduction to K-pop’s global potential. Gangnam Style peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, an extraordinary crossover moment for a Korean artist in 2012.

The video was also the first K-pop music video to pass 1 billion YouTube views. Since then, BTS videos including Dynamite and Butter, plus BLACKPINK’s Pink Venom and How You Like That, have joined the billion-view club, but no other K-pop visual has reached PSY’s new 6 billion benchmark.

PSY last released the album PSY 9th in 2022. His promised YouTube upload has not been framed as a new music release, leaving fans to watch for what the original K-pop viral icon posts next.
